My House Fund

November 14th, 2006 at 12:47 am

I have decided to start saving for a house- "my house", oh how nice those words sound. Right now, I live in a tiny box of an apartment, and it seriously does not feel like living. I love the idea of having furniture (right now I have the bed and an old sofa) and actual ROOMS to entertain guests. Right now, my "rooms" consist of the various corners of my apartment, and then there's the bathroom and tiny alcove kitchen. I have $30,000 in readily accessible funds, and maybe another $10,000 that I can scrounge up from recalling CDs and stuff (though I don't want to touch that) but I think I should still work/save for the next year or so. It'll be much easier to apply for and earn a loan, plus I'll have more of a safety net, so that 100% of my paychecks won't be going towards paying off the mortgage.

I told my parents this while we were eating lunch Saturday. I'd paid for lunch, but my mom had contributed $5, which wasn't used. She insisted I keep it, and said, half jokingly, "This can go into your house savings."

Every dollar helps!

a house was the only thing i actually 'wanted' too!!! i decided at 26 i wanted to by a house before i turned 30, which at the time seemed an almost impossible goal due to financial circumstances. we lucked out and found a perfect place and had to scrounge to make it happen, but i closed at 28.25 yrs Smile
your plan is much better: get ready to buy a house BEFORE you find the perfect one! good luck!

Yeah, I most definitely want a house too some day. "My house" does sound nice, doesn't it? Big Grin

However... I know it won't happen anytime soon... and in the meantime, I am willing to be patient about it. I suppose this reservation is tempered by the fact that I have already been a homeowner once before, and it was extremely costly and stressful. I was actually quite glad when we sold our house!

The next time I buy a house, I won't make the same mistakes twice. Smile

a house...someday I'd like to have a house...with my ex we owned an apartment...still, it was nice to know that, provided we paid our mortgage on time, noone could make us leave! (my parents never owned a house, and we were asked to leave the one we had lived in for 15 years because the owner had sold it and the new owner wanted to live in it, not rent it!) ....Ale wants a house "just for ourselves"...

I bought my first house at age 21 with the money I had saved for a down payment. I never regretted it. The secret is not to buy more house than you can afford.
